In a heartwarming display of faith and community, Berlin First Baptist Church in Maryland embarked on a groundbreaking journey to host a Vacation Bible School (VBS) specifically tailored for children with developmental disabilities. This transformative initiative, spearheaded by children's director Shannon Diehl, not only provided a safe and inclusive space for these children but also inspired a deeper understanding of God's love and acceptance.

Overcoming Fears, Embracing Possibilities

For years, Shannon Diehl had pondered the idea of hosting a VBS for children with developmental disabilities, but fear and self-doubt had held her back. However, as God's prompting became increasingly persistent, Diehl found the courage to take action. With the support of the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware (BCM/D) and its disability missionary, Katie Matthews, as well as grants from the BCM/D and the Eastern Baptist Association, Diehl and her husband, Pastor Brad Diehl, prayerfully led their congregation in bringing this vision to life.

Creating a Sensory-Friendly Environment

In addition to the usual VBS preparations, the church went the extra mile to ensure the event was truly inclusive. They created a dedicated sensory room and recruited "buddies" who would stay with each child throughout the program, providing personalized support and companionship. The church also assembled sensory bags for each participant, filled with noise-canceling headphones, electronic doodle pads, fidget toys, and other calming resources.

Embracing Unique Expressions of Worship

At the opening celebration, some sat shyly with their parents, while others sang with gusto, danced, and waved their arms with pure joy.
